[23.11.2018] Awards were granted to the Camera Jagellonica 2018 laureates

[23.11.2018] Awards were granted to the Camera Jagellonica 2018 laureates

We have announced the laureates of the second edition of the Camera Jagellonica photographic competition. During the opening of the exhibition of winning photographs on 22 November in the Student Zone at Collegium Kołłątaja, the laureates of the competition and the authors of the awarded works received their diplomas and awards.

‘Today's opening and the outcome of the competition prove that many of you are thinking highly of Jagiellonian University. However, in order to take part in the competition, a mere idea was not enough - it was necessary to transform this thought, with the help of one's own sensitivity, into an image. This is a difficult and interesting experience,’ said Jagiellonian University Vice-Rector Professor Stanisław Kistryn at the opening of the exhibition.

The submitted photographs were evaluated in four categories by a professional Jury consisting of: Mateusz Skwarczek (‘Agora’ photographer, winner of the Grand Press Photo Award 2011 and 2016), Anna Wojnar (photojournalist at Jagiellonian University and the ‘Alma Mater’ monthly magazine), Dagmara Kwolek (academic teacher, specialising in documentary scientific photography) and Jarosław Praszkiewicz (lecturer at the Warsaw and Krakow Academy of Photography, press photojournalist).

‘I would like to thank the participants of the competition for submitting their excellent photos and the authorities of Jagiellonian University for supporting this remarkable project, which shows us how diverse and not yet fully discovered our university is. We had to select only a few photos, but I would like to ask everyone taking part in the competition - don't be discouraged. I hope that next year you will all be able to share your photographic vision of the university again,’  said Anna Wojnar, member of the jury.

The awards, which were jointly presented by the Rector of Jagiellonian University, Professor Wojciech Nowak, and the Vice-Rectors, Professor Dorota Malec and Professor Stanisław Kistryn, were received by:

in the ‘Architecture’ category:

Maciej Maziarka for his photograph entitled ‘Zawrót głowy’ (distinction: Anna Piwowarska-Sosik for ‘Samotność w sesji’)

in the ‘Impressions’ category:

Dorota Wróbel for her work entitled 'Pochód' (distinction: Anna Piwowarska-Sosik for her ‘Dwa światy’);

in the ‘Student life’ category:

Bartek Berlin for his photograph 'Anno Domini 2018' (distinction: Oleksandra Kovalska for her ‘Dowód’);

in the ‘JU in the world’ category:

Marcin Czarnowicz for his photograph ‘Gdy nie starczyło już promieni słońca’ (distinction: Róża Ludwikowska for her ‘Jesteś całym moim światem’).

In addition, the Jagiellonian University Rector, Professor Wojciech Nowak, awarded a Special Award to the best work of all those submitted. It was awarded to Andrzej Raś, author of the photograph ‘Eyes of UJ. A Journey into the Science’.

‘When trying to choose the best photo, I was looking for a work that depicted an open university that sees problems but is not afraid of them, is vibrant with youth and keeps smiling. The winning photo fulfils all of these ideas,’ said the Rector justifying the choice of the best photo.

The following were also awarded:

The ‘Cafe Nauka’ Award, which the editors of the science.uj.edu.pl portal awarded to Anna Krzykawska for her work ‘Z miłości do laboratorium’

and

A Special Award, which the competition's partner, the Creative Agency ‘albo.tak’, honoured Katarzyna Żabicka, author of the photograph ‘#prostestmedics’.

The Camera Jagiellonica photographic competition is addressed to the academic community of Jagiellonian University and all of its supporters. The aim is to integrate our community by showing the architecture of the university, the achievements of scientists, student life and the history of Jagiellonian University.
